We are thrilled to announce that the dates have been set for our 6th annual Summer Chamber Music Camp, which runs from August 1-5 2022! The camp is located at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Naperville, and open to WSSTE/NSS students from the Book 4 level through those beyond the Suzuki repertoire. We are planning to hold the camp in person, and will enforce CDC guidelines to ensure everyone’s health and safety.
Each camp day consists of:
Independent rehearsal with a small chamber ensemble
Supervised coachings with a faculty member
Music theory
Orchestra (with students playing along with faculty members, and without a conductor)
Chamber masterclasses (coachings in front of an audience)
Supplemental team-building exercises as health and safety guidelines will allow
Auditions will be held on Saturday, March 19 in Western Springs. Students should play a recently polished piece that clearly demonstrates their ability level. Please discuss with your private teacher what piece would be appropriate. Applications and audition scheduling are open and available here.
For those of you wondering about the Honors Chamber Program we explored last fall, it remains our intention to form one or two auditioned Honors Chamber Ensembles who will meet year round, and act as musical ambassadors for the school (view info meeting video). Students auditioning for the 2022 Summer Chamber Camp will have the opportunity to be considered for the Honors Chamber Ensembles (students who are not interested in the honors program may still opt to audition for the Chamber Camp only). Those who are accepted to this honors program will receive a full scholarship to attend Chamber Camp on the condition that they commit to continued weekly rehearsals and coachings during the 2022-2023 academic year. Furthermore, there is no additional tuition cost during the school year for participation in the Honors Chamber Ensembles.
What is chamber music? The term “chamber music” most often refers to music for small ensembles (duets, trios, quartets, etc.) in which each player is independent on their part, and works collaboratively as an equal with the other members of the group. Ensembles work on developing a unified sense of tempo, style and articulation, balance and musical expression, all without the aid of a conductor. Many professional musicians find chamber music to be the most fulfilling and enjoyable playing that they do!
